Scottish Learning Disability Week

How volunteering’s helping people with a learning disability be seen in Scotland!

Scottish Learning Disabilities Week is a celebration of people with a learning disability and the valuable contributions they make every day. This year’s theme is “I am here… to be seen” – a reminder that people with a learning disability should be recognised for their strengths, talents, and the positive impact they make on the world around them.

At our specialist supported living service in Falkirk, that message comes to life through volunteering!

The people we support are actively giving back to their local community. By volunteering to care for shared outdoor spaces, they’re helping to create welcoming environments for everyone in their community. Through this, they’re also building confidence, learning new skills, and challenging perceptions of what people with a learning disability can achieve.

Green fingers grow confidence

For the people we support in Falkirk, every visit to the community gardens where they volunteer is an opportunity to make a difference.

During their volunteering sessions, they spend time watering plants, tidying flower beds, removing weeds, feeding local birds, and help keep the spaces clean and safe. These tasks make a lasting impact on the local community, the environment, and the people we support.

Each of our Falkirk housemates brings something different to the volunteering team. For some, the activities have even led to a new passion for gardening, as they take pride in nurturing flowers and watching them flourish.

Volunteering also reflects individual interests while encouraging everyone to work together towards a shared goal. Along the way, they’ve developed practical skills, strengthened friendships and built independence in other areas of their life. With confidence growing beyond weekly volunteering sessions, the people we support have pursued other opportunities to participate in community activities. The positive experiences gained through volunteering continue to inspire them to set new goals and broaden their aspirations for the future.

Breaking down barriers

People with a learning disability can often face barriers accessing volunteering or employment. Opportunities are sometimes limited by misconceptions about what they can’t do, rather than being seen for what they can do.

But the right support can make a difference and change how people with a learning disability are seen. This is something our team in Falkirk are deeply passionate about. They advocate that everyone has purpose and should be able to discover and develop their talents, strengths, and abilities.

By tailoring volunteering opportunities to each person’s strengths and interests, the people we support have been able to contribute in a way that’s meaningful for them and suits their needs. And in return, the local community has seen the kindness, commitment, and teamwork the people we support can achieve.

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. Local residents have praised the group’s hard work and dedication, commenting on the difference they’ve made. In recognition of their efforts, the volunteers were proudly presented with a certificate by Bloomin Bo’ness, celebrating the positive impact they’ve had on the surrounding area.

But more importantly, they were recognised for who they are – capable, caring individuals making a meaningful contribution to their local community.

Everyone has something to offer

For many of the people we support in Falkirk, volunteering has become much more than a weekly activity. It’s provided a sense of purpose, belonging, and achievement. The confidence gained through these experiences is helping them work towards personal goals. Individuals who were once hesitant to meet new people are now confidently chatting to members of the local community and building friendships.

Volunteering has also had a positive impact on wellbeing, with individuals often returning home feeling happier, more motivated, and keen to talk about their experiences. Every task completed, every conversation started, and every flower cared for is another reminder that everyone has valuable skills to share.

As Scottish Learning Disabilities Week reminds us, people with a learning disability don’t just want to be included – they want to be seen for everything they can contribute. The volunteering initiative at our specialist supported living service in Falkirk shows exactly what can happen when communities create opportunities instead of barriers. Communities become stronger, perceptions begin to change, and the people we support can show the world just how amazing they are.
