Summer at Wellington Road

Wellington Road is one of our specialist residential care homes in Somerset. Here, our team are passionate about helping every person we support discover new interests and achieve their own unique goals. From scenic walks to day trips, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the things they love and spend time together.

Being able to embrace meaningful activities helps the people we support build confidence and live the fulfilling lives they deserve. These activities bring extra benefits too – like supporting them to develop new skills and increase their independence.

Setting Sail

One of the highlights at Wellington Road is exciting sailing trips to Wimbleball Lake. These aquatic adventures have been a big hit with both the people we support and our colleagues! A firm favourite, this activity brings lots of joy to the whole household. When they have a sailing activity planned, the excitement starts from the moment everyone wakes up in the morning! Together, they put their daily living skills into action. Everyone pitches in to prepare sandwiches, snacks, and drinks before setting off to the lake.

Everyone enjoys a relaxing day on the water. Some people simply take in the peaceful surroundings, while others enjoy the soothing sensations of the boat moving on the water. Then, everyone comes together to enjoy the picnic they prepared earlier. The beautiful setting offers an opportunity to enjoy sensory regulation and spend time in the serenity of nature. Plus, everyone can enjoy a shared interest – which is great for strengthening relationships!

For our housemate Derek, trips to the lake are particularly special. He experienced sailing for the first time after moving to Wellington Road and it quickly became one of his favourite activities. Derek is deaf, so sailing provides a unique sensory experience. Feeling the wind on his face and the gentle movement of the boat creates calm and deeper connection to the world around him.

Getting out in nature has a huge impact on the wellbeing of the people we support, and Derek is a wonderful example of this. Having this opportunity to take part in an activity he genuinely loves gives him a sense of achievement and empowers his voice and choices.

The benefits extend to everyone at Wellington Road. The open space, fresh air and natural light provide a sense of freedom and calm. Days like these improve emotional wellbeing, strengthen friendships, and build confidence.

Staying active

Keeping active plays an important role in both physical and mental health at Wellington Road. The whole household enjoys regular visits to Compass Wellbeing, where everyone can take part in activities that involve movement, social interaction, and sensory engagement.

The hydrotherapy pool offers a calming space where the people we support can relax, move freely, and take gentle exercise. The on-site sensory room provides a peaceful sanctuary that promotes relaxation and sensory regulation.

Our housemates take part in weekly ‘stay and play’ sessions, giving them the chance to enjoy a wide variety of activities based on their interests. There’re lively social clubs, disco sessions, fitness classes and cricket – everyone is encouraged to get involved in activities that suit them. These activities promote a healthier lifestyle and help the people we support build self-esteem as well as feeling included and valued.

Getting creative

Our team also provide different creative activities that the people we support love to get involved with. These activities have many emotional benefits, encouraging self-expression, reducing stress, developing skills and increasing self-confidence.

Music sessions are a big hit at Wellington Road! These sessions are always filled with laughter, smiles, and engagement. The people we support choose from a wide variety of instruments – like tambourines, drums, shakers, maracas, and chimes. Our support team encourage them to express themselves through the sounds the instruments make. Even those who don’t want to play an instrument often enjoy sitting with everyone, listening to the music and sharing in the experience.

These sessions have been particularly beneficial for our housemates who are nonverbal.  Music opens channels for them to communicate and express their emotions beyond traditional methods. Through the power of music, everyone at Wellington Road feels understood and connected!

Arts and crafts sessions are also a popular activity. They give everyone the chance to express themselves in different ways. Some people enjoy getting hands-on with papier mache, painting, and drawing, while others simply enjoy watching the creativity unfold around them. Creating art pieces gives the housemates a sense of achievement and pride, they have something physical they’ve created to show their families and be proud of.

Making memories together

Life at Wellington Road is filled with opportunities to try new experiences and make lasting memories. Alongside sailing, music, and art, the people we support engage in many other exciting activities. Whether that’s boarding a steam train, chilled beach days, or at-home discos, their needs and interests are always nurtured.

Every activity, whether it’s a big day out or an afternoon spent together at home, is centred around helping the people we support to live full, active and meaningful lives. By encouraging new experiences and supporting individual interests, our team at Wellington Road continue to help each person enjoy the things they love and achieve their goals.
