Life at Red Gables

Red Gables is our specialist residential care home in Somerset. Here, our expertly trained team provides person-centred care and support for people with a range of needs and conditions to live the fulfilling lives they deserve.

Most of all, they promote independence and focus on strengths and abilities! With their approach, the people we support achieve more than they ever thought possible. From incredible transformations to nurturing talents, the people we support at Red Gables continuously inspire us and always remind us why person-centred support matters.

Marc found his voice

Marc is a person we support with a learning disability. When he first met our team at Red Gables, his life was very different to the one he leads today. He had mobility issues and used aids to mobilise at home and in the community. He didn’t have an established routine or hobbies he enjoyed. It was clear Marc wasn’t living the life he wanted, particularly when he stopped verbally expressing himself.

Our team at Red Gables knew there was more to Marc’s story and could see his potential. So, they started supporting him to re-establish a level of independence that was right for him. From the day he moved in, our team empowered him to make decisions for himself and use his voice.

With his happiness and preferences at heart, he soon started shaping his home to suit his tastes. By promoting Marc’s choices, he found his voice again. He asked for blinds for his room, a tub chair to relax in, and then something super meaningful to him – he asked our team to play some music for him.

Music was meaningful to Marc, but because he’d lost the confidence to express himself before he joined us at Red Gables, it wasn’t part of his life anymore. Within minutes of the music starting, he was dancing with our team!

This was an emotional moment for both our team and Marc’s family, who had helped him find his new home at Red Gables. Connecting through music, dancing, and sharing joy, Marc soon started building relationships with our team. Together, they began setting him some goals. With Marc’s voice at the centre of all decision making, we identified he wanted to go out more, rebuild skills, and establish a consistent routine. And with our support, he did just that!

A new chapter

Since moving into Red Gables, Marc has embraced his life and started making his goals a reality. With our team’s support, he’s developed more confidence and has improved his mobility! No longer relying on his mobility aids around the home, he now wakes up early, showers independently every day, and prepares his own breakfast.

By looking beyond his learning disability and putting his personal needs and wishes at the heart of Marc’s support, our team have helped him embrace who he is. He’s living the right lifestyle for him… and it’s full of exciting activities! From karaoke nights at the local pub, attending gigs, and spending time in the garden, to building great relationships and improving his wellbeing, Marc is living life on his terms again. And he’s not stopping there – he now wants to start swimming sessions and join a local gym!

From the moment he joined us, our team at Red Gables saw Marc’s potential. With our support, he sees it too. Now, there’s no stopping him!

Daniel rebuilt confidence

In 2020, the pandemic affected many people’s lives. For Daniel, it changed everything.

Daniel is an autistic person we support at Red Gables. He also has epilepsy, which means he requires support from our team with many aspects of daily life.

Before 2020, he enjoyed regular trips out, visits with family, and had an established routine. But prolonged periods of isolation had a significant impact on his confidence and wellbeing. When restrictions ended, re-engaging with the community around him felt overwhelming. He became withdrawn and struggled with essential everyday tasks.

Our team at Red Gables knew they needed to compassionately support Daniel using a gradual, phased approach. Working alongside other specialist health professionals and Daniel’s family, they took their time to understand what he needed to increase his confidence.

With this information, they used a consistent approach to help him progress at his own pace. Daniel was in the driving seat of making changes to his support, and approaching things on his terms made all the difference to his progress.

Embracing small steps

Quickly, Daniel started making progress. At home, he started to care for his personal space again. He made his bed, ensured he had fresh clothes to wear and contributed to keeping the home neat and tidy.

He also started reconnecting with the world around him. And now, Daniel’s enjoying meals out, playing football in the park, and even going to the beach.

He’s also joining in with family outings again, including a trip to McDonald’s for a treat! During the pandemic, these things were put on hold because they created anxiety for him. But with tailored, person-centred support, he’s now enjoying his favourite things again!

Around his home, Daniel’s spending more time in shared spaces, joining in with group activities, and settling happily into a new bedroom that he’s truly made his own. Seeing Daniel become more confident and engaged has been incredibly rewarding for our team at Red Gables. It has been amazing to watch him develop greater independence while continuing to receive the support he needs to live a fulfilling life.

Every step has happened at Daniel’s pace, with his needs, wellbeing, and happiness prioritised by a compassionate team who truly understand him.

The power of the right support

Marc and Daniel’s inspiring journeys show the difference person-centred support makes. And how our incredible team at Red Gables promote individual voices and choices.

Their progress has been made possible by a team that took time to listen, build trust, and understand them as individuals. Whether it’s helping someone find their voice again, taking pride in everyday routines, or rebuilding community confidence, our support at Red Gables is truly person centred.
