Anthony is an autistic person we support who has a mild form of cerebral palsy and is visually impaired. He’s been with us for two years and has embarked on an incredible journey!
Anthony lives at Mountain Ash one of our residential care homes in Hastings, Hampshire. Here, the people we support are truly at the heart of everything we do. It’s more than just a place to live, it’s a home built around family values, connections, and embracing a life that’s truly meaningful.
Anthony’s move to Mountain Ash
Anthony had spent his life living with his parents, but when they sadly passed away, he moved in with his brother on a temporary basis while exploring longer-term support options. When a friend mentioned Mountain Ash, Anthony was eager to learn more and arranged to visit. The welcoming atmosphere, friendly team and homely environment made Anthony feel comfortable at the home. Anthony and his family decided that Mountain Ash was the right place for him.
Although excited about the move, it was a little daunting for Anthony. His support team understood this and helped him to settle in at a comfortable pace. They encouraged him to decorate his new bedroom to create a space that provided comfort and familiarity.
This was something Anthony was keen to do, so he got to work filling his new room with items from his family home, creating a space that was truly his. Before long, Mountain Ash began to feel like home.
Building independence
When Anthony first moved into Mountain Ash, it was a huge change. He had never lived away from his family home and had always relied on family members for support with managing everyday tasks. So, developing these skills required patience, encouragement and the right guidance.
Anthony’s team worked with him to create a weekly activity planner, so he knew what each day looked like. Together they created structured routines, to help him build confidence with day-to-day tasks.
What may seem like small achievements to some have been huge milestones for Anthony. Learning to make his own bed, doing his own laundry and managing parts of his daily routine have been a huge step in his journey towards independence. Anthony hadn’t done these things for himself before, so each success boosted his confidence and gave him a sense of pride.
Today, Anthony independently completes many aspects of his morning routine, including his personal care and preparing breakfast. These achievements have not only developed practical skills but have also given him greater choice, control and confidence in everyday life.
Active community life
For Anthony, building a fulfilling life has meant much more than learning new skills at home; he’s also embraced life in the community.
He enjoys going shopping for his own essentials, giving him greater choice and control over his everyday life. He also regularly attends theatre shows and cinema trips – experiences that bring him joy and create special memories.
Over time, Anthony has become more confident and he now enjoys socialising. He’s joined a theatre group, made new friends, attends social events, and has found a sense of belonging in his community.
Supporting people to live fulfilling lives!
Anthony’s journey is a wonderful example of what can happen when people are given the right support, encouragement, and opportunities.
Throughout his time at Mountain Ash, he has grown in confidence, developed new skills and become increasingly independent. Most importantly, he is creating a life that reflects his choices, interests and aspirations.
With a growing sense of independence and belonging, Anthony is excited about what the future holds and is determined to keep living his best life.
