Our Home
Heather House is a residential care home located in Birtley, Durham. Here, we provide support for up to 11 people with autism, challenging behaviour, epilepsy, Down’s syndrome, and learning disabilities.
Supporting You
At Heather House, we work with the people we support to create person-centred care plans designed around their needs, interests and aspirations. These plans are designed to help them achieve their goals and live fulfilling lives.
Our passionate team encourages the people we support to engage in opportunities to learn new skills, become more independent, and embrace new experiences.
As well as providing a full programme of in-house activities, such as craft sessions, therapeutic music sessions, and sensory sessions, we also encourage the people we support to become active members of the community. This can include using local shops and cafes on a regular basis, looking for volunteering opportunities, or attending courses at local colleges and libraries!
Facilities
Our nine-bed home is spread across two floors, and we also have a separate two-bedroom bungalow.
Our home is carefully designed and adapted to meet the needs of the people we support. Specialist features include assisted baths, ceiling tracking hoists, sensory rooms, and hydrotherapy facilities.
The main house has lots of shared communal areas where the people we support can develop independent living skills. We benefit from a spacious living room, dining room, kitchen, and a large garden.
Our specialisms
Our Commitment to Quality
Our registered services are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in England and the Care Inspectorate in Scotland and Wales. As a sector-leading provider, we are dedicated to delivering high-quality, safe, and effective care and support that you can trust.
Community
Our home has good public transport links, with local bus routes to nearby cities.
At Heather House, the people we support enjoy days out to our local open-air museum and country parks. We also take regular trips to Gateshead, Newcastle, and Durham where we visit historical museums, cat cafes, theatres, and our local steam train railway for afternoon tea on a train.
We attend events such as community discos as well as trips to the cinema, bowling alley, library, restaurants and cafes, and picnics on nice days.
Our team encourages community participation, assisting the people we support to our local village hall. Here, they join in with activities such as keep fit classes, bingo and tabletop fairs. We also maintain excellent relationships with organisations like our local gym, where their health professionals support our housemates with healthy lifestyle options.
Our Team
Our team involves the people we support in all decisions about their care and support, either directly or through their family or advocate. This includes making choices about menus, activities, and holiday destinations.
We also involve the people we support in our colleague recruitment processes, supporting us to find the right people to deliver their care.
