Zid is a person we support at Barnford House, our specialist Prader-Willi syndrome residential care home in the West Midlands. He has Prader-Willi syndrome and type-2 diabetes.
Since we last caught up with Zid, he’s continued to smash his goals, embracing a life filled with happiness, achievement, and a newfound sense of confidence!
Zid’s journey is a remarkable example of resilience, determination, and what person-centred support can truly achieve.
A person-centred approach
Our team at Barnford House are passionate about delivering person-centred care, ensuring that Zid remains at the heart of every decision about his support. By listening to his wishes, understanding his needs and supporting his choices, the team have helped Zid feel heard, valued and empowered to shape the life he wants to lead, build his confidence, and discover new passions.
When Zid first arrived at Barnford House, his mobility was extremely limited, he was reluctant to access the community, and unfamiliar routines and expectations increased his anxiety.
Recognising that trust was the foundation for progress, Zid’s team took the time to understand him as an individual, build meaningful relationships and tailor his support to what mattered most to him. With patience, encouragement and a focus on achievable goals, Zid began to experience success one step at a time. He gradually built his confidence, and this opened new opportunities.
New achievements
Zid has continued to achieve incredible milestones, demonstrating remarkable resilience, determination, and commitment to a healthier lifestyle. He enjoys nutritious meals and has embraced a range of physical activities, including longer walks, gym sessions, and swimming.
Through the support of his team and his own personal determination and dedication, Zid has transformed his health, losing an incredible 100kg – a truly outstanding achievement that reflects the hard work he and his team have put in.
One of Zid’s most meaningful achievements has been fulfilling a lifelong dream of visiting a theme park and experiencing the excitement of the rides. Previously, weight-related safety restrictions had prevented him from accessing many theme parks. Rather than allowing this barrier to define what was possible, Zid used his dream as motivation to work towards his goals. Now, he has experienced the thrill of the rides for himself, sharing memorable moments of fun and excitement with his team.
And the adventures don’t stop there! Zid has enjoyed kayaking at Dudley Canal, completed his first hike at Clent Hills, and developed his cooking skills. He now regularly prepares delicious meals for his housemates. These experiences reflect not only his growing confidence and independence, but also his willingness to try new things, embrace challenges, and discover new passions.
There are no limits to Zid’s dreams, and each barrier he faces is overcome with newfound confidence and independence.
Starting volunteering work
As Zid continued to explore his goals and aspirations, volunteering emerged as a new opportunity. When a voluntary receptionist role became available, Zid’s team discussed it with him, ensuring he had the opportunity to explore something that interested him and decide whether it was right for him.
Zid was excited to take on the challenge. His team carefully assessed the environment to make sure he could participate safely and confidently. Zid then took another exciting step towards greater independence.
Zid now volunteers every Tuesday morning, and the impact has been significant. The role has strengthened his communication skills, boosted his confidence and independence, and given him a greater sense of purpose. It has also enabled him to contribute meaningfully to his local community, develop new skills and gain valuable insight into the world of work. Most importantly, Zid loves his role and takes pride in what he does.
Keen to continue building his experience, Zid also volunteers at a farm each week, where he learns about animal care and develops practical skills. He continues to embrace new challenges with enthusiasm, demonstrating a growing willingness to step outside his comfort zone and explore new opportunities.
Through person-centred support, Zid is discovering new possibilities, building valuable life skills, and living meaningful experiences.
A healthier, happier Zid
Zid has been on an incredible journey since joining us. One of his most significant transformations has been in his emotional wellbeing. With the consistent, person-centred support of his team, Zid has developed the confidence and skills to express his feelings and communicate his needs more effectively. As a result, he is better equipped to navigate situations that may once have caused him distress. This has helped him approach everyday challenges with greater confidence and resilience.
From the person who walked into Barnford House in 2024, Zid’s progress has been remarkable. Today, Zid is healthier, happier, more active, and more independent. Through his determination and willingness to embrace new opportunities, he has achieved milestones that once felt out of reach.
Living with Prader-Willi syndrome still brings ongoing challenges, but it does not define who Zid is or what he can achieve. With continued support tailored to his individual needs, alongside his own commitment, Zid continues to challenge expectations, pursue his ambitions, and build a life filled with purpose, enjoyment, and opportunity.
Zid’s story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when person-centred care, a dedicated team, and an individual’s own aspirations and determination come together. Zid’s journey shows that when people are truly supported and empowered to follow their dreams, amazing things can happen.
