Meet Mubeen!
Mubeen is a young adult we support at Cranmer Day Centre in Wolverhampton. He’s a happy, smiley person who has a profound learning disability.
Every day, our specialist team supports Mubeen with a range of complex needs. He has cerebral palsy, which affects his movement, posture, and coordination. He’s also registered blind and has a Nasogastric (NG) feeding tube, which delivers food to his stomach via his nose and throat.
Before joining us in 2023, Mubeen had a Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) tube fitted to support his nutritional intake. Sadly, it leaked internally, and Mubeen developed sepsis, a serious infection which put his life at risk. After a series of operations, Mubeen made a full recovery. But he still needed support with his daily dietary needs.
Because of everything Mubeen had been through, his doctors decided it was safer to fit a continuous Nasogastric (NG) feeding tube. Usually fitted for short-term use, this tube eventually presented a new set of challenges for Mubeen.
Long-term NG tubes carry higher risks and require more management. Before joining Cranmer Day Centre, Mubeen attended school, where he benefitted from an onsite nurse. However, the time came for him to leave education. Mubeen and his family struggled to find the specialist support he needed to manage his needs.
Life-changing support
When Mubeen and his family approached our team at Cranmer Day Centre, they were pleasantly surprised. Our dedicated team knew they could support Mubeen. Empowered by Service Manager Amy, they undertook necessary training to support his needs and manage his NG feeding tube.
By delivering compassionate, person-centred care and support, they quickly established a bond with Mubeen and his family. Built on trust, they effectively support Mubeen with all aspects of his health care.
Throughout the day, they complete frequent checks of his NG tube. Mubeen can only take small amounts of food, so he has feeds that last all day. His support team regularly check his feeding tube is in the right place, flush it to make sure his hydration needs are met, start and pause feeds so they can check his stomach pH levels, and change over his feeds.
With our team taking care of Mubeen’s complex health needs, he can focus on doing activities he enjoys! With their support, Mubeen regularly accesses the local community and enjoys time in the Cranmer Day Centre sensory room.
Because our team deliver person-centred support, they understand who Mubeen is as a person. They ensure activities are tailored to meet his needs, likes, and preferences, and communicate with him in a way that’s comfortable for him. With his wellbeing reinforced by our caring team, Mubeen is settled and happy. He’s a popular member of Cranmer Day Centre and makes friends with everyone he meets!
Health and happiness
Since joining us, Mubeen’s benefitted from a more structured daily routine. Before, he would sleep a lot during the day and wake frequently at night. Now, he’s enjoying the right level of stimulation during the day, allowing him to have a restful night’s sleep. He’s happier and his mood is boosted.
His family are feeling the benefits of this too. They were concerned about Mubeen’s health and his future when he left school. But with our expert support, they know Mubeen is safe, happy, and healthy – and spending his days doing things that are meaningful to him.
