In 2024, Libby moved into Mason House, one of our specialist Prader-Willi syndrome homes in Nottinghamshire.
Libby has Prader-Willi syndrome and had also been recently diagnosed with diabetes, requiring insulin twice a day. After spending time with another provider, Libby’s placement broke down, leaving her feeling lost and the future uncertain. When we first met Libby, she was in crisis, feeling unsettled, and refused early support.
But with a dedicated team, and the right support at Mason House, Libby has blossomed into a healthier and happier version of herself!
Restoring health and confidence
Prader-Willi syndrome is a rare genetic condition which makes managing weight more challenging. The condition affects the part of the brain that regulates hormones responsible for appetite, growth, and emotions. This means people with the condition are unable to feel fulfilled from eating.
Living with Prader-Willi syndrome had taken its toll on Libby’s confidence, independence, and quality of life. When Libby arrived at Mason House she was motivated to achieve her weight loss goals. To kickstart Libby’s journey, her team got to know her as a person, discovered her interests, and goals, and took the time to understand her challenges.
Slowly, Libby’s team began building a trusting relationship with her and created a personalised support plan focused on Libby’s passions and goals. Libby’s support plan included a calorie-controlled meal plan, to ensure Libby was eating a range of healthy meals, with room for her favourite treats in moderation. With the support of a team that truly understood Libby’s needs, she was well on the way to transforming her health and happiness.
Overcoming challenges
In just 17 months, Libby has achieved some amazing goals. Her biggest achievement is losing an incredible 43kg in weight. As a result, her health has improved significantly, and she no longer needs insulin to manage her diabetes. With her determination and the dedication of her team, Libby has transformed her health and happiness.
To help Libby achieve this impressive milestone, her team helped her understand how different foods can impact her health, weight, and diabetes. Libby has also increased her exercise and now embarks on regularly walks with her team.
Sticking to a consistent routine and balanced meals has been key for Libby. At Mason House, everyone is invited to get involved with meal planning. The team use cookbooks and work with the people we support to create exciting, low-calorie recipes. When a meal is chosen, the team calculate the day’s calorie intake and ensure that they can prepare the correct amount of food for everyone’s needs. This structure around meals has helped Libby feel in control and brought her comfort. The meal planner is displayed around the home and is accessible for everyone to see.
Beyond the numbers on the scales, Libby has gained confidence and a greater quality of life.
Focusing on Libby’s individual needs, she receives dedicated support at home and in the community each week. This consistent and person-centred support enables her to participate safely and confidently in community outings, while also developing her independence in a warming, familiar home. Meaningful community participation provides Libby valuable opportunities to develop essential life skills, build confidence, gain greater independence, and enjoy positive and fulfilling experiences.
A committed team
Libby has made remarkable progress since joining Mason House. Having a team that is committed to her has made all the difference. She now engages with her team and is supported to make choices independently. She enjoys her time in the community and has even been on a trip to the seaside, where she explored the beach, spent quality time with her team, and went shopping.
Libby has embarked on a journey that’s empowered her to take control of her health and we couldn’t be prouder. Her achievements are a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with person-centred support.
