Supporting autistic people at Christmas!

Christmas is just around the corner, and at Voyage Care, our specialist autism homes are getting ready to celebrate!

The festive season is full of lights, music, tasty food, and time spent with family and friends – but it can also be overwhelming for autistic people. Changes to routine, decorations, and social activities can make this time of year challenging.

In this post, we share some of the approaches our teams use to help autistic people feel supported and prepared for the festive period. From Christmas Day itself to decorations and special activities, these tips offer practical ways to make the holiday season more enjoyable for everyone.

Decorations

Christmas decorations can affect autistic people in very different ways. For some, twinkling lights and festive décor are a source of joy and a comforting sensory experience. For others, they can feel overwhelming, and the decorations may need to be taken down soon after Christmas.

In our specialist homes, we make sure everyone’s needs are considered so the festive season can be enjoyable for all. For example, one person we support loves the Christmas lights so much that they must be switched off before bedtime – otherwise, excitement keeps them awake! Meanwhile, others prefer calmer surroundings and find bright lights overwhelming.

To strike the right balance, some rooms are fully decorated, while others remain neutral, giving people the choice of a quieter space to take a break from the festive celebrations whenever they need. This way, everyone can enjoy Christmas in a way that suits them.

Countdown calendars

To help the autistic people we support prepare for the changes Christmas can bring, some of our specialist teams introduced countdown calendars.

These calendars give individuals a clear way to anticipate the festive season, helping them adjust to changes in routine. They show when decorations will go up, how their surroundings might change, and when special events and activities will take place – making the lead-up to Christmas exciting, predictable, and easier to navigate.

Christmas Day

Christmas Day is a truly special time in our homes – a day full of traditions, treats, and togetherness. At Voyage Care, we work hard to make the day feel homely and magical for the autistic people we support. Many consider the people they live with, and the staff who care for them, as family, so creating a joyful, inclusive atmosphere is always our priority.

Food is a big part of the celebration. We ensure the people we support are involved in choosing what they want for Christmas dinner, whether that’s a classic turkey, pork chops with mash, or even a festive pizza shaped like a Christmas tree. All meals are carefully tailored to individual tastes and dietary needs.

Beyond the food, Christmas Day is about spending time together and enjoying shared traditions. Whether it’s opening presents, taking part in festive games, or simply relaxing in a decorated home, these moments create lasting memories and a sense of belonging – making Christmas Day truly special for everyone at Voyage Care.

Presents

For many, giving and receiving presents is one of the most exciting parts of Christmas, and at Voyage Care, we make sure it’s a special experience for everyone.

We always ensure that each autistic person we support can buy gifts for their loved ones, often making use of ‘quiet hours’ in shops to avoid the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping. For those who don’t have family to buy gifts for, we make sure they still receive something special! Our caring teams gather wish lists from everyone to help make sure each person feels valued and receives a present from Santa.

When it comes to presents, some people we support prefer them to be unwrapped so they can see exactly what each one is. It’s essential to cater for autistic people at Christmas based on their individual needs and preferences. Whatever the time of year, their support needs remain at the centre of their care.
