Tom’s transition to supported living during COVID-19

Meet Tom! He lived at one of our residential care homes in Walsall. In 2020, he decided that it was time to take that next step towards independence. He was interested in supported living.

Taking the next step towards independence

Tom spoke to the manager at the residential care home about transitioning to a supported living property in Warwickshire. “I said I wanted to move because I wanted more for my life. Everything was okay at my home in Walsall, but I needed to take that next step.” Tom said.

Tom and the residential care home manager had a meeting and discussed the vacancy at a supported living flat nearby. “I came to have a look at the flat, met up with my social worker and we discussed it.” Tom explained.

A safe transition process

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the transition process was affected to ensure the safety of the people we support and our staff. “Obviously it took a bit longer than we planned because of COVID.” Tom said. Tom and the manager did video calls to talk about his likes, dislikes and interests. Staff worked with Tom every step of the way to ensure his needs were going to be met.

After the video calls, staff supported Tom to move into supported living. We asked him how he found the moving process, “It was alright! I was very nervous because of the new environment and new people.” Tom felt comfortable as staff were there to make the transition as smooth as possible.  “It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done” Tom told us.

Achieving long-term goals

Tom feels that this move to supported living will help him achieve some of his long-term goals. Something he may not have been able to do at his previous home. He wants to get another tattoo, join a wheelchair football team, go swimming and get physiotherapy on his legs.
