Meet Leah, a 26-year-old artist with Down’s syndrome who lives in one of our supported living properties in Reading. We caught up with Leah to find out how she’s been keeping busy during lockdown.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdowns that followed, Leah was working in retail at her local Marks and Spencer shop. She loves her job and feels that it gives her a sense of purpose, so after her daily routine was disrupted, Leah felt frustrated.
She commented, “I really enjoy working there and I miss it. I find it very annoying and stressful not going to work.”
The team at Berkshire DCA understood the impact that not working would have on Leah so together they created a list of exciting activities to do throughout lockdown. For example, Leah enjoys baking so all the team got involved and hosted a big bake off. They also held frequent themed parties and began experimenting with new recipes to cook.
Throughout lockdown, Leah has also kept in contact with her family through daily video calls with her sisters and catching up with her nieces and nephews. Over Christmas the family had a Zoom party with her dad keeping up the festive cheer by wearing a Father Christmas mask! Leah still missed her job staff helped Leah to find a hobby. Leah discovered painting by numbers and now has finished this masterpiece!
“I like to paint by numbers as it relaxes me and gives me something to do. I always have a cup of tea while I’m painting. “I like to paint by numbers as it relaxes me and gives me something to do. I always have a cup of tea while I’m painting.Leah
