Career Study

Jan

Jan commenced employment as a bank support worker at Saxon Lodge, a new service supporting three young people with complex needs, in May 2005. Having previously worked in the manufacturing industry, Jan felt apprehensive, but very enthusiastic, about this new role.

She was committed to the new job and keen to learn, and her natural ability to interact with the people living in the service was quickly developed through training. A few months later she decided to take up a contracted position. She continued to actively seek learning opportunities and apply everything she learned to her work in the service. Jan commenced her NVQ in 2006 and achieved NVQ level 3 in 2007.

Changes within the senior team presented Jan with the opportunity to act in a senior position. She was able to respond to any challenges with confidence and provide support to the senior team. She continued to develop her skills and knowledge through training and in March 2009 successfully applied for the deputy manager post.

Jan’s manager states "Jan has always delivered care to the very highest standard and her commitment and enthusiasm have an extremely positive effect on the service as a whole. She is a shining example of what commitment, dedication and enthusiasm to learn can achieve, and I am delighted to have been able to support her progress."
