Green-fingered Scott grows in confidence

Starting paid employment can be daunting if you have never worked before. At Voyage Care we encourage the people we support to take advantage of opportunities to build their skills and confidence.

Volunteer - ScottScott Brown lives at one of our homes in Ayrshire, he wanted to look for a paid job but didn’t feel confident that he could do it. The manager at his home helped him to find a voluntary position with Breaking Ground, a gardening project in Ayrshire.

We spoke to Scott about his job and why he enjoys working:

He said: “I work for three and a half hours per week on a Tuesday, I go every week.

“It helps me to build my confidence to be able to work towards getting a paid job. I like gardening, growing flowers and vegetables, and making bird boxes for the birds. I like birds.

“I would recommend it to someone else as you meet new people and have people to talk to and you have the opportunity to learn new skills that will help you work towards getting a paid job.”

Breaking Ground provides a community based service for people within North Ayrshire, offering support, training and recovery for those with learning disabilities, mental health problems and other forms of social exclusion.

The ultimate aim of Breaking Ground is to give people an opportunity to develop both physically and mentally, and use the group as a stepping stone to progress to something else.
