100 women for 100 Years - Celebrating International Women's Day 2018

2018 celebrates 100 years since women won their right to vote in the United Kingdom and since then women have made great strides in the name of equality.

In 100 years, we have made incredible progress in gender equality, but it is a continual uphill climb and many of us forget to celebrate the journey. All of us at Voyage Care want to applaud the amazing skills and triumphs of women in the social care sector and beyond.

In honour of the women who fought for their right to vote an entire century ago, we spoke to 100 women in the sector about their views on gender equality, their personal struggles and achievements.

Throughout the year we will continue to share amazing stories all over social media and, of course, we will be celebrating International Men’s Day in November.

Themes

So many themes emerged during our conversations, below are some inspiring quotes.

Equality

Gender equality to me is to be seen as an equal, to walk alongside a man not in front or behind.

Hannah Bailey – Project Manager, Voyage Care

Women shouldn't be made to feel that they are born to be an accessory to a man's life, nor should they be made to feel guilty when they choose a career over a family.

Lauren Neadle – Internal Communications Executive, Voyage Care

Women can now work in areas that our mothers and grandmothers wouldn't have considered.

Marilyn Walker - Service Manager, Voyage Care

We need to ensure women’s voices are heard and the experiences of women have equal weight in our cultural narrative

Caroline Byram – Head of Tendering and Marketing, Voyage Care

Challenges

Being taken seriously in the roles I have had at such a young age with others believing I should be at home being a mum - I did what I believed and managed to be both a mum and have my career.

Urvi Patel – Operations Manager, Voyage Care

There just seems to be an accepted falsehood that the 'types' of work men do, are worth more & that makes me so angry.

Alli Cary – Internal Communications Team Leader, Voyage Care

You can only work with the tools you have and therefore, you have to adapt and embrace the challenges you face daily.

Anthea Russell – Service Manager, Voyage Care

Family

I myself have experienced attitudes that suggest I'm less of a Mum because I work, and less of a professional because I have children - that's not OK.

Alli Cary – Internal Communications Team Leader, Voyage Care

I want to be a good role model - especially for my children.

Dannielle Metcalf – Co-ordinator, Voyage Care

Being taken seriously in the roles I have had at such a young age with others believing I should be at home being a mum - I did what I believed and managed to be both a mum and have my career.

Urvi Patel – Operations Manager, Voyage Care

Speaking Up

Push yourself, push the people around you and don't be too hard on yourself if things don't go right the first time.

Hannah Bailey – Voyage Care, Project Manager

Don’t be afraid to ask the difficult questions.

Dorrell Townsend – Operational Manager, Voyage Care

Belief and self-esteem

Learn from others, but always know your own talents.

Sue Baker, Director of MIND’s Time to Change

Be true to yourself.

Becky Penrose, Community Fundraiser, DSA

Be confident, do what you think is right and believe that you can make a difference.

Louise Houghton – ABI Placements Manager, Voyage Care

Young women still have low esteem and feel they have to be PERFECT in every aspect of their life.

Carol Povey – Director of the Centre for Autism, National Autistic Society

My father always instilled in me a strong sense of self-belief and a clear understanding that my gender should never be an obstacle.

Janette Walker, Operational Manager, Voyage Care

Education and awareness

I think if we bring up our future generations with different ideas on gender equality we can make a real difference.

Lauren Neadle – Internal Communications Executive, Voyage Care

We need to focus more on individuals, rather than what moulds they should fit.

Kelly Harrison, Communications and Engagement Manger, BILD

It means showing my daughter that she can do anything if she puts her mind to it and she should not have to face obstacles / boundaries because she is a woman.

Laura Jordan – Head of Legal, Voyage Care

Ensure I educate my daughter to have open mind and speak up for what she believes in and ensure she knows nothing is out of her doing.

Urvi Patel – Operations Manager, Voyage Care

Determination and perseverance

You can only work with the tools you have and therefore, you have to adapt and embrace the challenges you face daily.

Anthea Russell – Service Manager, Voyage Care

Celebrate the success and don't punish yourself when you do not meet them. Plan again and try again.

Amanda Griffiths – Director of Quality, Voyage Care

Tips

We also asked people if they had any tips for women on how to be a successful woman. Here are just some of the valuable pieces of advice we received:

Trust in your own abilities and don’t be tempted to look for validation elsewhere. Listen and evaluate, but know your own mind and be confident in your decisions. Walk your own path.

Kelly Harrison - Communications and Engagement Manger, BILD

It doesn't matter if you make mistakes. I wish I had been braver and made more when I was younger.

Carol Povey – Director of the Centre for Autism, National Autistic Society

Stay true to yourself - and celebrate your achievements.

Caroline Byram – Head of Tendering and Marketing, Voyage Care

Don't give up. Keep trying to break down the barriers and keep trying to instil fairness and equity across all communities.

Celine Wilkinson - Peripatetic Manager, Voyage Care

Lead an authentic life, one where it is possible to make choices, to take responsibility, to know yourself and who you are, to use one's talents and abilities to their full, whatever they are.

Dr Catriona Stewart – Chair of SWAN

Be resilient and never put up with discrimination.

Laura Jordan – Head of Legal, Voyage Care
