Supporting you
Westwood House, located in a beautiful part of Swindon, provides support for ten people with varying needs including learning disabilities, dual diagnoses and those who have previously experienced secure and mental health services. It offers a positive, supportive home for people who wish to return to community living and develop their skills before moving on to greater independence in the future.
The people living here receive support for a variety of needs including:
- Learning disabilities
- Personality disorders, Psychosis, Schizophrenia
- Brain injuries resulting in personality changes including bi-polar, depression and emotional disorders
- Previous abusive relationships
- Previous offences and staff support and guidance to ensure they remain safe to themselves and others they may come into close contact with
- Understanding choices and promoting healthy and safe lifestyles
- Health issues including diabetes
- High functioning autism and Asperger’s
We work with you to give you autonomy over how you wish to live your life. The people who live here are very involved in the day to day running of the home and how it looks. You would be involved in menu planning and grocery shopping and you can choose what activities you would like to do every day. We encourage everyone to participate in regular house meetings and we support you to maintain contact with your family and friends, and spend quality time with people who are important to you.
The home caters for a wide range of ages and activities reflect individual wishes and desires. These include accessing local colleges and day centres, horse riding, gym, dancing and Music Alive sessions run by a music therapist. People can also access clubs and social events in the evenings.
Facilities
The house is a detached Victorian building with a gated entrance. There is an established large garden surrounding the house, with plenty of seating areas and this offers a tranquil setting for relaxation. Within the house there are ten spacious bedrooms, a large kitchen, where several people can cook safely at one time, and two generously sized communal rooms, which are used for a range of activities, or simply relaxing. The home is brightly lit by natural light through the large Victorian windows, some of which are protected stained glass.
The team
Our staff are particularly skilled in supporting people who have complex behavioural needs. Staff training reflects a sound knowledge base around mental health and an understanding of why people become anxious and may, at times, be unable to cope.
Our manager and staff teams have built networks with appropriate external agencies, such as psychiatric and behavioural therapists and medical professionals, and seen positive outcomes for the people we support in response to the recommendations of the local community teams.
