Supporting Derek on his adventure holiday

Derek is a young man living in one of our supported living services in Kent. He is non-verbal with a diagnosis of learning disabilities and Cerebral Palsy. He also uses an electric wheelchair to mobilise.

Derek’s self-contained flat is one of six within the property, where he is supported through a combination of 1:1, 2:1 and shared support.

When Derek was first supported by Voyage Care, he expressed that he wanted to increase his access into the community, both locally and beyond. The team worked with Derek to achieve this, and this eventually saw Derek going on a fantastic holiday, which he is set to repeat this year.

The starting point was assisting Derek to increase his communication skills so he was able to clearly define and communicate his goals to those supporting him. This involved progressing from PECs to learning an interactive program on a tablet. The program was constantly updated - often with a number of unflattering photos of staff members which Derek found highly amusing!

The tablet was also then used to assist in the development of pictorial support plans which aimed to help Derek increase his mobility and leg strength through regular use of a walking hoist. This was perhaps the most difficult to maintain for Derek, but persistence paid off and in late 2016 he was able to join friends on a multi-activity holiday, mobilising to get into harnesses etc. without discomfort.

Derek then spent the following weeks showing everyone photos of him abseiling, tandem cycling and zip lining amongst other activities. Derek is just about to return to his holiday destination and is very excited!
