Onwards and upwards for Amy

Amy* was happy living at home with her mum but always said that she wanted to live more independently and have more control over her life. So in September 2016, we supported Amy* to make the exciting move from her family home to a supported living property in the local area. She also often attended a local resource Centre to take part in activities and socialise.

Amy’s* journey towards independence did not stop there. Amy* was keen to get into employment, so she decided to enrol onto a maths course at her local college to enhance her skills.

The staff at the resource centre saw how Amy’s* confidence grew during her time at college and were impressed with her progress. The team knew that she wanted to get into employment following her course, so offered her a voluntary role as a Learning Support Assistant at the day centre. The role involves supporting individuals with more complex needs during activity sessions. Amy* was extremely delighted and is still currently enjoying her role.

This experience has given Amy* the confidence to now start looking for paid work. She has written her own CV with the help of the Down Syndrome Association, and got herself an interview with a local supermarket branch.

The staff at the local resource centre are all hoping the best for Amy* and will be there to support her transition into any new job role she gets.
