“In this industry, you are constantly learning"

I’ve always wanted to work within care. When I completed my GCSE’s, I started a youth training scheme apprenticeship in health and social care whilst working in an EMI nursing home. I have always had a determination to help people and make their lives better.

As I learned more about the sector, the idea that every day would be different attracted me, not forgetting the huge amounts of opportunities there is to learn. To date, I have worked in many different areas of care including drug and alcohol abuse, mental health and brain injury.

I’m currently working at one of Voyage Care’s brain injury rehabilitation centres in Liverpool. Every day is different - I enjoy the challenges I face while supporting people who have a brain injury. You have to learn to think outside of the box and have a lot of patience. You also have to be willing to experiment with different strategies - what will work for one person won’t necessarily work with another. In this industry, you are constantly learning.

In my role of Therapy Coordinator, my typical day includes staff handovers, ensuring that the goals of those who we support are addressed and discuss any changes within individual care plans. I also complete daily therapy exercises with the people we support, liaise with other professional therapists including, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and more.

I enjoy my job immensely. The reward of working within care is that you get to see the hard work the people we support, the staff and the therapists put in to ensure those we support have reached their goals, whether that be walking, cooking or living independently.

I also enjoy building professional relationships, I find it helps me to understand their roles. I learn a huge amount from working with people of different job roles; this ultimately benefits both staff and the people we support, as the new skills I develop from these professionals, I am able to put into practice.

Laura Wood

“Laura truly shines and emulates what and why we do what we do. Laura has overseen and driven recovery and rehabilitation for a number of people we support. I truly believe she is an exemplary staff member, who tirelessly works hard to ensure that the individuals we support are reaching their own goals and outcomes.” – Simon Evans, Operations Manager.
