Helping Dylan to get back on his feet

Dylan was involved in a high speed collision and sustained a brain injury at the age of just 23.

The accident left him unable to walk or swallow (due to fear of choking) along with a decompressed skull. Dylan moved into one of Voyage Care’s ABI services in Derbyshire where he required two-to-one care and support.

Dylan struggled at the beginning of his journey and found it hard to cope. He was fed through a tube in his stomach and he had to rely on his support workers for every aspect of his personal care.

As time went on he had reconstructive skull surgery and worked with the Voyage Care physiotherapy team to regain strength in his legs. Dylan was finally able to  follow a daily exercise regime.

As Dylan’s confidence grew, he felt comfortable enough to try swallowing his food and fluids. This was successful and he could have his peg removed.

With the support from Voyage Care staff and his family, Dylan eventually moved back to his family home with his Mother.

Arriving home in a wheelchair, it didn’t take long for Dylan to challenge himself and before he knew it, he was walking unaided.

Dylan is still living at home and going from strength to strength – thanks to the Voyage Care team who supported him.

Dylan's mother said: “Words cannot express how grateful we are for all of the help, kindness and support all of the Glasshouse team have shown to Dylan. You have surrounded him with love and this is such a gift. You are all amazing.”
